Every September, Sports Eye Safety Month serves as a vital reminder of the importance of protecting our vision both on and off the field. In 2025, OCULAR Interface proudly joined this initiative to raise awareness about the often-overlooked risks of sports-related eye injuries and to promote preventive strategies supported by technology and innovation.
The Importance of Eye Protection in Sports
Eye injuries are one of the leading causes of visual impairment in athletes, ranging from mild scratches on the cornea to severe trauma that can lead to permanent vision loss. Sports such as basketball, cricket, football, badminton, and racquet sports present particularly high risks. However, experts agree that up to 90% of these injuries are preventable with the correct use of protective eyewear.
OCULAR Interface’s Awareness Campaign
Throughout September, OCULAR Interface shared educational content and resources aimed at: Highlighting the risks of sports-related eye injuries across different sporting activities. Encouraging athletes, parents, and coaches to adopt protective eyewear as standard equipment, not just an optional accessory. Raising professional awareness about the role of optometrists and ophthalmologists in guiding athletes toward the right safety measures.
The Role of AI in Sports Eye Safety
A central part of our campaign this year was showcasing how artificial intelligence (AI) can contribute to sports eye safety. From AI-powered diagnostics that detect trauma-related changes in the eye to predictive analytics that identify players most at risk, technology is transforming prevention and care. AI is also supporting the design of advanced protective gear, optimised for comfort and performance without compromising safety.
Engaging the Eye Care Community
Through newsletters, blogs, and social platforms, OCULAR Interface sparked conversations within the eye care and sports communities. We encouraged professionals to share knowledge and best practices while motivating athletes to take proactive steps in safeguarding their vision.
Looking Ahead
Our participation in Sports Eye Safety Month reflects OCULAR Interface’s wider mission to combine education, prevention, and innovation in protecting vision. Just as athletes train hard to achieve peak performance, safeguarding the eyes should be seen as a fundamental part of their preparation. OCULAR Interface remains committed to advancing awareness and embracing new technologies that empower both professionals and the public to make eye safety a top priority—not only in sports but in all aspects of life.
