Blindness Awareness Month 2025: Shining a Light on Preventable Vision Loss with OCULAR Interface

Blindness Awareness Month, observed each October, is a global call-to-action to recognise the realities of visual impairment — and to work collectively towards a world where preventable blindness is eliminated. At OCULAR Interface, this mission sits at the very core of what we do.

In October 2025, we dedicated our platforms, education programmes, and advocacy efforts to amplify the message that vision loss does not have to define one’s future — early detection, access to care, and awareness can change lives.

Seeing the Bigger Picture: The Global Landscape of Blindness

Globally, more than 43 million people are blind, and over 295 million are living with moderate-to-severe vision impairment.¹
A staggering portion is caused by conditions that could be treated or prevented if identified early, cataract uncorrected refractive errors, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, corneal diseases

In low- and middle-income regions, the barriers stem from a lack of access to timely eye care, screening tools, and public awareness. Even in well-resourced countries, preventable eye disease is often detected too late.

That’s where education — and technology — becomes crucial.

Living Without Limits: Supporting People with Vision Loss

Blindness Awareness Month is not only about prevention — it is also about inclusion.

At OCULAR Interface, we emphasised the importance of assistive technologies that support independent living, advocacy for accessibility in digital and physical environments, recognising the achievements and contributions of individuals with visual impairment.

Vision loss does not define a person — lack of access does.

How Everyone Can Make a Difference

Here are simple ways anyone can contribute to reducing preventable blindness:

  • Schedule yearly eye examination
  • Choose nutrition that supports eye health
  • Use protective eyewear during risky activities
  • Reduce prolonged screen exposure and follow 20–20–20 rule
  • Spread awareness and support eye health initiatives

Every small action strengthens the fight against avoidable vision loss.

OCULAR Interface is committed to improving the future of eye health through technology-driven early detection tools, professional education and skill development, and global community awareness initiatives. By bridging innovation, learning, and advocacy — we are helping to build a world where preventable blindness is significantly reduced.

Together, let’s continue to See the Possibilities — during Blindness Awareness Month and all year long.
