Cataracts are primarily regarded as an age-related clouding of the crystalline lens in our eyes. At present surgical removal of the cataract, where an artificial lens made from polymers of acrylic is inserted in the eye, restoring vision. This procedure has evolved immensely from Extra Capsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE), which needs sutures to close the incision, to femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, where precise incisions are made which promote faster wound healing, removing the need for sutures.
These advancements have made cataract surgery an enormous success and it is one of the most common eye surgeries performed.
However, in a recent report released by World Health Organisation in August 2023, cataracts are still the leading cause of preventable second only to refractive error, on a global level. Even with such advancements we have barely made a dent in managing this common eye condition.
The main drawbacks could be
- Lack of awareness
- Insufficient access to eye care in under-developed regions
At OCULAR Interface, we are keen and steadfast in tackling these drawbacks by raising awareness and sharing information through our social media posts. We, yet again, turn to our trusted friend, Artificial Intelligence, to help us diagnose cataracts through telemedicine and machine learning algorithms.
Stay tuned and join us in this Cataract Awareness Month of June.
